Created by the National Fire Prevention Association, the NFPA 13R covers rules and guidelines pertaining to the design and installation of fire sprinkler systems in respect of an occupancy. Primarily used in the designing and installation of fire protection systems for residential building occupancies ranging from one to four stories, including apartments, dormitories, and small multi family homes, provides some form of cost-effective fire-protection alternatives with life safety and property-loss objectives. NFPA requires sprinklers in common areas, individual units, and areas on the way to the unit, common areas of the hallways, and stairwells, with some alternatives allowing for a more complex building than NFPA 13. The standard allows fire protection of residential properties to be obtained, while aiding the efficiency of installation and meeting the goals of life safety.
